Sanhill cranes roosting at sunset

The Sandhill crane migration arrives at the Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge in 100,000 to 250,000 birds at peak in winter. The sight of these majestic 10 pound, 4' tall birds wading in this very shallow lake, jostling for position while rattling up a storm. In this photo from 2012, this is just one flock of hundreds that landed near the shore and is wading out to the rest of the birds in slightly deeper water.
