Sandhill Crane Sunset

Sandhill Crane Sunset

Thousands of Sandhill Cranes spend the winter at the Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge in Texas. They land on the lakes starting around sunset and huddle on the lake for protection from predators. At sunrise, they fly off to feed in the surrounding fields, searching for seeds, tubers, small animals, and insects. They roost in the area starting October or November and flying north in February or March, with the largest numbers gathering in January and February.
